Learning English

My family is hosting a Japanese exchange student. We have been thinking of ways to help her learn English while she is here.

The library has many resources for English language learning. Books, CDs, DVDs and various combinations.

Manga! Our student is already familiar with the format and many of the series titles. The only difference is that the library copies are in English!

DVDs. Check out some movies and turn on the English closed captioning.

What about getting an Audio Book on CD, Playaway or through Library2Go and bringing home the print copy as well? There are Internet resources too:

LoudLit is a web site that offers some public domain classics in mp3 accompanied by the text of the story.

Voice of America has a webpage devoted to what they call Special English. They describe it as “…clear and simple English for people whose native language is not English. It has a core vocabulary of 1500 words.  Most are simple words that describe objects, actions or emotions.” You will find short news stories and American history programs. They are available in mp3 with accompanying text and pictures.
