What's your favorite novel of all time?
I had someone ask me this question at the reference desk the other day. I don’t really have one particular favorite, and this sort of made me feel like a bad librarian.
I ended up suggesting she try reading After Dark, by Haruki Murakami, whose novels I’ve been enjoying lately. It’s a nice short (191 pages) introduction to the author.
After doing a quick poll around the office, no one else that’s here can be pinned down to a favorite novel either. Phew, it’s not just me. Maybe it’s a symptom of us being surrounded by such an amazing variety of books every day – it’s hard to choose just one.
Some of the fiction suggestions I often make to inquiring readers include:
The Blind Assassin, by Margaret Atwood
The humorous series by Alexander McCall Smith, featuring the oblivious Professor Von Igelfeld – these make me laugh so hard I cry:
The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs
At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances
Do you have a favorite novel of all time? We’d love to see what you suggest in the comments.
