Senator Kennedy
As the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts and the third-longest serving U.S. Senator in the nation’s history with his nearly 47-year tenure, Edward M. Kennedy (1932-2009) helped pass important legislation on civil rights, health care reform, and education.
Kennedy bravely faced the diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor in May 2008, but he continued to remain politically active as he battled his illness. He supported fellow Democratic senator Barack Obama by speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 and by attending Obama’s Presidential Inauguration in January 2009. Kennedy died during his ninth term in office on August 25, 2009; he was 77 years old.
