Weird Books

poodleHere’s a fun post for the long weekend. Today I was alerted to this page on the AbeBooks.com website: The Weird Book Room.

It features such gems as “Know how to clip a poodle” (photo on the left). Now, as a good librarian, I see nothing wrong with dog grooming books – indeed, they are quite useful if you want to learn how to do it. I don’t think that’s really all that weird. What I find weird is the picture of the dog on the cover… it’s unsettling somehow. (Plus this book looks rather out of date. I’m sure poodle fashions have changed since then.)

Anyway, you will find many other gems on this page, including Bombproof your horse, and Old tractors and the men who love them.

If can’t get enough of weird and old books, another fun site is Awful Library Books. It has gotten a lot of press this summer, including on Time.com and Boing Boing.

getthemessageThis blog is run by two great librarians in Michigan. They are crusading against old and outdated books sometimes found on library shelves (sometimes due to a lack of funding for new books).

Their blog is hilarious, featuring not only outrageous books, but funny commentary as well. Sometimes they will also include images from inside the book, to great effect. See Careers in computers or mullet fashion show as a good example.

Have a great long weekend!
