NaNoWriMo 2009
First off I owe you an apology because November, National Novel Writing Month, has already begun and time is of the essence. If you can’t dash off your 50,000 word (175-page) novel by November 30 this year, you have a heads up to be thinking about what you might craft next year. They go by NaNoWriMo and here’s what you’re supposed to do: write one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month’s time. For inspiration, here’s Leonard Bernstein’s quote from the site: “To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time.”
The idea is to get you going on the novel you know you want to write some day. Last year they had 21,000 folks who crossed the finish line, or had their uploaded novel verified by the web-based team of robotic word counters. You can get all the details on their website.
As you can imagine, the library has lots of writing how-tos (not to mention publishing how-tos, if you get that far).
Not that you will have time to read about writing while you are writing around 6 pages a day, if you take on the challenge.
For the rest of you, browse the titles in the 808.3 section, or look up the subject Fiction-authorship. Here’s a few titles to get you started:
This year you write your novel / Walter Mosley. (2007) 808.3 MOSLEY
Writing fiction : a guide to narrative craft / Janet Burroway with Elizabeth Stuckey-French. (2007) 808.3 BURROWAY
Lights! Camera! Fiction!: the movie lover’s guide to writing a novel / by Alfie Thompson. (2006) 808.3 THOMPSON
Happy writing!
