Las Vegas promotes literacy

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week featured (for the first time) an “eBooks TechZone” with the newest and best in ebook devices. With all the doom and gloom about publishing, reading and literacy in the news, ereading may give reading (and readers) a boost!

Quite a few companies have jumped on the ereader bandwagon lately. TheĀ current ereader buzz is about larger, multifunction readers and color screens.

  • A cool example of a multifunction device is the enTourage eDGe which is half ereader, half tablet PC.
  • Pixel Qi has placed their reflective “ePaper” screen technology in the Notion Ink- Adam. The display looks like color LCD but the back lighting can be turned off so it can be used as an ereader in ambient light. You might recall this type of display was originally developed by the MIT folks for the legendary OLPC XO.
  • Another impressive sight is the Mirasol color e-ink display being used in some experimental Qualcomm devices.

We are still on track to offer ePub books through Library2Go soon, so be sure to keep an eye on our Ebooks blog for further info. While you’re waiting, why not become more familiar with Library2Go by checking out a downloadable audiobook? Perhaps even give our new library catalog interface a try?
