We all see and feel the effects of the recession in different ways. From the perspective of a library staff member, I can tell you that there have been a lot more people coming into the library who are looking for work.

People use our computers to apply for jobs, and they check out our resume and career books.

We want to offer help beyond the great resources we already have in our collection and the access to the internet and word processing that our computers provide.

We are doing this by offering a free employment workshop series in the month of June.

This will be a three-part series in Corvallis, and there will also be sessions in our Alsea and Monroe branches. The sessions will be presented by trained professionals – Greg Ivers of WorkSource Oregon and Dawn Rasmussen of Pathfinder Writing and Career Services.

Here’s how it will look:

1. Job Search Skills
Presented by Greg Ivers of WorkSource Oregon
- Corvallis Public Library: Thursday, June 11th, noon to 1 pm

2. Resume Writing
Presented by Dawn Rasmussen of Pathfinder Writing and Career Services
- Alsea Community Library: Wednesday, June 17th, noon to 1:30 pm
- Monroe Community Library: Wednesday, June 17th, 3:30 to 5 pm
- Corvallis Public Library: Thursday, June 18th, 9 to 10:30 am

3. Interview Skills
Presented by Greg Ivers of WorkSource Oregon
- Corvallis Public Library: Wednesday, June 24th, 11 am to noon

Our patrons are often our strongest supporters and best advertisers. :) Please help us out by spreading the word about this program!

If you have any questions about this series, please ask us.

This would work well in normal times, but when there are literally no jobs available, the shortfall being in the millions, it’s not going to help much to hone application and interview skills for what does not exist.

  3. Kris Eskridge says:

What a wonderful idea to have seminars for those of us who are suddendly out of a job after 17 years or longer and need to brush up on these skills. However some of us have made other commitments during the day such as voluteering at various churches or schools or outreach programs to occupy our time and can’t be there during the day to take the class. Have you thought about having an evening class sa from 7-9 p.m.? Any chance of these classes being taught in either Lebanon or Albany?

    • Lisa says:

Hi Kris, we did think about doing evening classes. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, due to the availability of some of our presenters, as well as the limited hours in our Alsea and Monroe branches.

Because our library is funded by the taxpayers of Corvallis and Benton Co., our series is only taking place in Benton County, and anyone is welcome to attend. But there are great resources available to you in Linn County. WorkSource Oregon is offering some of our sessions here at the library. They have offices all over the state (in Lebanon and Albany as well), and offer free classes, similar to what is being presented at our library. Contact them directly for more information on the many great services they offer job seekers.

You may also want to contact the Albany Public Library to see what resources and services they have available to job seekers. You can call them at (541) 917-7580 or email them.
