World Book Night will be here on April 23, but you need to sign up here by Feb. 1. World Book Night is a charity dedicated to the promotion of literacy and the celebration, sharing and enjoyment of reading among teenagers and adults. This year, the Library will be a pick up site for books to be given away in our community.

World Book Night gives you the opportunity to give 20 copies of a book to 20 people you do not know at community gathering places of your choosing. It can be a coffee shop, hospital, shopping center, shelter, but you may NOT give them out at the library! The aim is to promote reading to people who might not otherwise buy or borrow a book. We want you to share your love of books and your enthusiasm for reading. Here is the list of books.

There is no cost involved. Publishers, printers, and paper companies are picking up the tab. And the authors are waiving their rights to royalties. You can find all the information about WBN, as well as the sign-up form, at the website.

The idea for this book giveaway began last year in the United Kingdom as a way to bring books to light readers, not dedicated readers like yourself. It has spread to the U.S. and Germany this year. So join other readers in Benton County in signing up today to participate. And ignore the “Night” part of the title, you may give your books away anytime during April 23, 2012. But first, you must sign up by February 1.

Want more information? Click here for a list of FAQs about World Book Night.

Grandin describes how a life of sensory overload – loud noises, sudden changes, and large crowds, for example, can cause an autistic person intense distress. It’s as if the filter that most people have that prevents us from sensing and responding to more than is necessary in our environments is either not present or damaged in an autistic person. The movie provides many glimpses into Grandin’s mind as she becomes more and more able to relate how her thinking works. What is clear to me after watching, is that autism was and still is a completely misunderstood disorder.

As a child, Grandin’s mother was told that they should institutionalize her. Luckily for her, the animal world, and us, her family did not listen and persisted with her education. The road was not without great challenges for Temple and her family, but I think her life is a wonderful example of how not writing one’s intelligence off because they do not function “normally” is imperative. We are only yet to understand this complicated disorder and, until we do, understanding, love, patience, and kindness seems to have the potential to help unlock the autistic mind.

We have everything you need at the library (and know how to point you to the best of the ‘net!) to learn more about Temple Grandin and her accomplishments as well as autism:

First on my list is Colleen Morton Busch’s 2011 nonfiction piece, Zen Monks: Zen Mind Meets Wildfire at the Gates of Tassajara. I picked up this read almost entirely because of the cover art: a striking photo of five monks wearing a mish-mash of wildland firefighting gear and traditional robes. What I didn’t expect was Busch’s ability to weave a tactical discussion of wildland firefighting effortlessly within a larger narrative of Zen Buddhism as it exists in the mountains of the Los Padres National Forest.

Coincidentally Tassajara features a few yurts that had to be defended from the flames, which leads me to my next recommendation. Becky Kemery’s Yurts: Living in the Round allows readers to take a walk on the rounder side of living. Kemery offers a detailed and thoroughly researched historical account of yurts as they existed in times gone by. She compliments this with a discussion of more contemporary yurt structures both here and abroad. Adding to her thorough research is a wide array of beautiful photographs and a yurt resource list at the back of the book. Did you know that there are two large yurt manufacturing companies right here in our backyard? Check out yurts.com and yurtworks.com to view contemporary yurt offerings in Eugene and Cottage Grove.

Vassallo’s cookbook can inspire even the pickiest eater to reconsider the world of vegetables. Photographs by Clive Bozzard-Hill jazz up already great recipes and highlight some of the cooking techniques needed to make them a hit in your household. Vegetables make regular appearances in my kitchen, but in 2012 they are coming back around with a whole new attitude.

I watched a Werner Herzog documentary the other night titled Cave of Forgotten Dreams. This amazing documentary gives unprecedented access to Chauvet Cave, a cave in France discovered in late 1994, which contains the oldest known cave paintings in the world.

The paintings have been dated back between 30,000 and 32,000 years using radiocarbon dating. The discovery and documentation of the paintings is a remarkable enough subject for a documentary, but what makes the film even more fascinating is knowing that very few people have been allowed access to the cave. Only top scientists and researchers have been allowed inside as it is believed that even something as simple as human breath may damage the paintings. Herzog and his crew were allowed in with special lights that wouldn’t harm the paintings and they were forced to walk and film in single file so they did not veer off the narrow metal grates where people are allowed to step.

The paintings themselves are stunning. In many cases, the artists actually utilized the curves of the cave walls to produce 3-D paintings that appear to be in motion. A combination of a bison and the lower half of a woman can be found, an exceptional and significant painting for the time period. A series of red dots in one section of the cave was discovered to be created from the palm prints of a 6 foot tall man with a crooked pinky finger. There are also the breathtaking horses in the picture attached to this blog post. Additionally, tons of fossils can be found, mostly of the now extinct cave bears that used to hibernate there, along with scratch marks and footprints.

It’s obvious by the wait list that Cave of Forgotten Dreams is quite popular, but you don’t have to wait to see the paintings for yourself. A quick search for “chauvet cave” in the catalog will bring up many excellent pictorial titles currently in stock, or you can explore the cave online:

I’ve discovered two things: 1. 1984 is a phenomenal book for fans of sci-fi and great literature alike, and, 2. 1Q84 seems only loosely related to 1984, so I could have skipped it and still understood the Murakami novel. Reviews of 1Q84 have ranged from glowing to scathing, but no matter what I personally end up thinking of it when I finally finish 700 or so more pages (!), I will be forever grateful to it for encouraging me to read a bold, intense classic I’ll never forget.

Reading 1984 is in keeping with last year’s New Year’s resolution to read more classics I’ve missed. I also read Love in the Time of Cholera (boring!) and tore through Wuthering Heights (loved it!) Have you read a classic recently that has knocked your socks off? What are some of the best classics out there, in your opinion? Reading classics has definitely given me a greater appreciation for and understanding of my favorite genre, contemporary fiction. Classics are key to fully appreciating great literature.

If you’re a fan of 1984 or 1Q84, below are some other books you might enjoy. Also, don’t forget about our amazing database, Novelist ( look under “N” in the A-Z list of databases and use your library card to access it from home). If you want to find books to read based on other books you’ve enjoyed that have been recommended by a trained and well-read librarian, take a look at Novelist.

Inspired by the back-to-the-land lifestyle of Scott and Helen Nearing, Coleman’s parents, Sue and Eliot, decided to create their own idyllic reality on 60 acres of land in Maine that was sold to them by the Nearing family for a token sum. While Coleman emphasizes the beauty of growing up in a family culture that valued the bounty of nature and freedom of expression, she does not hesitate to also expose farming’s detrimental effect on family life-her own well-being as well as the accidental death of her younger sister.” From Publishers Weekly.

A host of characters from San Francisco’s 1970s music scene collide in ways that are hard to summarize, with peripheral characters in one chapter more fully developed in others. These well-defined characters and the engaging narrative are hallmarks of Egan’s earlier fiction, which include Look at Me, a National Book Award finalist, and the best-selling The Keep. Here, we learn that power is transient, authenticity is not all it’s cracked up to be, and friendships are often fragile, but the connections among people matter terribly. Often, we survive the self-destructive tendencies of youth only to realize that we’ve just exchanged one set of problems for another. Verdict In the end, this novel does offer hope, but it is the grubby kind that keeps you going once you’ve been kicked to the curb.” From Library Journal.

Overwhelmed by a crippling condition which nobody could explain or relieve, Parks follows a fruitless journey through the conventional medical system only to find relief in the most unexpected place: a breathing exercise that eventually leads him to take up meditation. This was the very last place Parks anticipated finding answers; he was about as far from New Age as you can get. As everything that he once held true is called into question, Parks confronts the relationship between his mind and body, the hectic modern world that seems to demand all our focus, and his chosen life as an intellectual and writer. He is drawn to consider the effects of illness on the work of other writers, the role of religion in shaping our sense of self, and the influence of sports and art on our attitudes toward health and well-being. Most of us will fall ill at some point; few will describe that journey with the same verve, insight, and radiant intelligence as Tim Parks”– Provided by publisher

Synthesizing research on human unconsciousness, Brooks meshes sociology, psychology, and economics to show how character is formed and how we strive for happiness and success. He follows Harold, from a solid middle-class background, and Erica, from a working-class background, from birth, through school, work, love, marriage, and into old age, detailing their lives, the choices they make given the complexities of their personal histories, the histories of their families, and the backdrops of their lives. Through Harold and Erica, Brooks masterfully details how we all are led to the choices we make and how they define our lives. He offers a new look at the assumptions we make about life and a close, deep examination of the failure of social and economic policies that do not take into account the complexities of human behavior, treating us as if we were totally rational and guided by our thoughts rather than some combination of intellect and emotion.” From Booklist

The open-endedness of the disappearance is intended to haunt and torture those left behind. This is an apt metaphor for the latest Ana Grey series entry, in which the FBI special agent is asked repeatedly to venture into situations of great ambiguity, in which violence is suddenly unleashed. Ana is a credible, fascinating heroine, both worldly and rueful about her unsettled life (her current lover is a hired gun who often leaves at the drop of a cell-phone message). This time out, Ana is in London, where she witnesses a harrowing drive-by shooting outside a restaurant, goes into disaster-recovery mode, and almost immediately is sent to Sienna to preserve her cover. The larger reason for this scenario is that Grey’s half sister, whom she has never met, has married into the network of Italian Mafias and provides an excellent excuse for Grey to infiltrate. Much of the action involves Sienna itself, including the annual running of the horses (the Palio) in the main piazza and the ways medieval family rivalries still persist. Tight suspense and fascinating background.” From Booklist

Of the 160 First Folios listed in a census of 1902, 14 were subsequently stolen-and only two of these were ever recovered. In his efforts to catalog all these precious First Folios, renowned Shakespeare scholar Eric Rasmussen embarked on a riveting journey around the globe, involving run-ins with heavily tattooed criminal street gangs in Tokyo, bizarre visits with eccentric, reclusive billionaires, and intense battles of wills with secretive librarians. He explores the intrigue surrounding the Earl of Pembroke, arguably Shakespeare’s boyfriend, to whom the First Folio is dedicated and whose personal copy is still missing. He investigates the uncanny sequence of events in which a wealthy East Coast couple drowned in a boating accident and the next week their First Folio appeared for sale in Kansas. We hear about Folios that were censored, the pages ripped out of them, about a volume that was marked in red paint-or is it blood?-on every page; and of yet another that has a bullet lodged in its pages. Part literary detective story, part Shakespearean lore, The Shakespeare Thefts will charm the Bard’s many fans”– Provided by publisher.

“The names Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan Massery may not be well known, but the image of them from September 1957 surely is: a black high school girl, dressed in white, walking stoically in front of Little Rock Central High School, and a white girl standing directly behind her, face twisted in hate, screaming racial epithets. This famous photograph captures the full anguish of desegregation — in Little Rock and throughout the South — and an epic moment in the civil rights movement. In this gripping book, David Margolick tells the remarkable story of two separate lives unexpectedly braided together. He explores how the haunting picture of Elizabeth and Hazel came to be taken, its significance in the wider world, and why, for the next half-century, neither woman has ever escaped from its long shadow. He recounts Elizabeth’s struggle to overcome the trauma of her hate-filled school experience, and Hazel’s long efforts to atone for a fateful, horrible mistake. The book follows the painful journey of the two as they progress from apology to forgiveness to reconciliation and, amazingly, to friendship. This friendship foundered, then collapsed — perhaps inevitably — over the same fissures and misunderstandings that continue to permeate American race relations more than half a century after the unforgettable photograph at Little Rock. And yet, as Margolick explains, a bond between Elizabeth and Hazel, silent but complex, endures”–Provided by publisher.

It capped off an amazing season, filled with highs and lows, excitement and sports drama. And so, in honor of their gritty win, I share four book suggestions about other champions that inspired me through their courage, motivation, optimism and perseverance.

Journalist/author Jenkins revives a forgotten piece of history and crafts an inspirational story about a Native American football team that is as much about football as Lance Armstrong’s book was about a bike. If you guessed that Yale or Harvard ruled the college gridiron in 1911 and 1912, you’d be wrong. The most popular team belonged to an institution called the Carlisle Indian Industrial School.
