“Do you cringe when a linebacker flattens a quarterback? Hold your breath when a field goal sails toward the goalpost? Watch in amazement as a touchdown pass spirals down the field? Behind those big hits, long kicks, and sensational throws is a science that will give you a whole new perspective on the game of football. A combination of Stephen Hawking and Mike Ditka, physicist and football fan Timothy Gay breaks down the fundamental laws of physics that govern America’s most exciting spectator sport.”

Author Ziedrich goes far beyond the classic bread-and-butters and dills with recipes that showcase the worldwide popularity of pickling. There are chapters on fermented pickles, from Half-Sours to Turkish Mixed Pickles; on fresh pickles such as Pickled Beets; on cabbage pickles from around the world like Kimchi and Curtido; and miso and soy sauce pickles. Twenty-five of the recipes are brand new, and the indispensable pickling primer has been fully updated with the latest in equipment, ingredients, and techniques.”

By Adrienne Martini

“A writer, professor, and mother with a penchant for “obsessively knitting,” Martini has spent plenty of time putting needles to yarn. In fact, she explains, knitting was central to her emergence from the postpartum depression she chronicled in 2006′s Hillbilly Gothic: A Memoir of Madness and Motherhood. Several years and a second child later, she’s looking for a new level of knitting challenge, not to mention fodder for this second memoir. Her trademark humor and honesty make for an engaging read (for example, she writes, “Both kids and craft have taught me how to deal with frustration so acute that I’d want to bite the head off a kitten”). Despite that, her grand knitting/writing project for 2008 was an Alice Starmore Fair Isle sweater, for its complexity of pattern, colors, and knitting technique. Martini casts on and explores the history of knitting, details visits and calls to fellow knitters near and far, and describes Starmore’s determination to protect her brand and copyright. It’s a lively, interesting blend of personal quest, knitting history and Starmore biography certain to appeal to knitters-and to readers who enjoy taking on (or reading about) a worthy personal challenge.

I read the message from our Library Director, Carolyn Rawles-Heiser, in the library’s latest Check It Out newsletter. Carolyn talks about the library’s new art piece unveiled on Monday. I thought it was great, so I’m posting it here as well.

If you have visited the Corvallis Library in recent weeks, no doubt you have been treated to a view of the Library’s wonderful new art piece, “Siuslaw Sun Showers,” by University of Oregon graduate Michele Gutlove. This glasswork is meant to evoke the feeling of light moving through the layers of our nearby Siuslaw National Forest. [See photos of the piece in the Corvallis Gazette-Times.]

But you may ask yourself, “How on earth can the Library afford something like this when they have had so many budget cuts?” The answer is that the piece, along with all the other art in the Corvallis Library, is a gift to our community, meant to enhance the experience of those who come to our most-visited public building. Tax money was not used to purchase any of the art in our libraries. The children of former Library Director Jeanne Larson and her husband Robert have generously given the Library Foundation funds to commission the art piece. They are also responsible for the gift of many books and furnishings, as well as other art pieces such as the statue of the children reading in front of the building and the blue “Marys Peak Bear” in the children’s section.

During the depths of the Great Depression, a vision for the continuing need for arts and culture, even in hard times, resulted in many great buildings and art works funded by the WPA, including Oregon’s own Timberline Lodge. Let’s not forget the need to nourish our souls while we endure economic difficulties. Thank you, Larson family, for your commitment to the community where you grew up and to the Library your mother so ably led.

The new titles are:

By Marlena de Blasi

“When Fernando spots her in a Venice caf and knows immediately that she is the One, Marlena de Blasi is caught off guard. A divorced American woman traveling through Italy, she thought she was satisfied with her life. Yet within a few months, she quits her job as a chef, sells her house, kisses her two grown kids good-bye, and moves to Venice. Once there, she finds herself sitting in sugar-scented pasticcerie, strolling through sixteenth-century palazzi, renovating an apartment overlooking the seductive Adriatic Sea, and preparing to wed a virtual stranger in an ancient stone church.”

By Rita Golden Gelman

“The story of Rita Golden Gelman, an ordinary woman who is living an extraordinary existence. At the age of forty-eight, on the verge of a divorce, Rita left an elegant life in L.A. to follow her dream of connecting with people in cultures all over the world. In 1986 she sold her possessions and became a nomad, living in a Zapotec village in Mexico, sleeping with sea lions on the Galapagos Islands, and residing everywhere from thatched huts to regal palaces. She has observed orangutans in the rain forest of Borneo, visited trance healers and dens of black magic, and cooked with women on fires all over the world. Rita’s example encourages us all to dust off our dreams and rediscover the joy, the exuberance, and the hidden spirit that so many of us bury when we become adults.”

“A delightfully candid memoir, unfettered, poetic, and ripe with discovery, “The Wishing Year” chronicles Oxenhandler’s journey into the art and soul of wishing. Soon she discovers that what started as a year’s dare has turned into a way of life.”

“Frances Mayes entered a wondrous new world when she began restoring an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. There were unexpected treasures at every turn: faded frescos beneath the whitewash in her dining room, a vineyard under wildly overgrown brambles in the garden, and, in the nearby hill towns, vibrant markets and delightful people. In “Under the Tuscan Sun, she brings the lyrical voice of a poet, the eye of a seasoned traveler, and the discerning palate of a cook and food writer to invite readers to explore the pleasures of Italian life and to feast at her table.”

Also, there is the sequel to Eat, Pray, Love, which came out this year – Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage.

Check out the new features and whole new look of Novelist!

Or if you are new to Novelist, this is a great resource for finding books in a series, read-alikes, reviews and recommendations on what to read next.

To access Novelist:

–Click here if inside the library

–Click here if outside the library

One of the new features that intrigues me is the the ability to search for appeal factors including storyline, pace, tone and writing style. While Novelist and our online catalog have always offered the ability to search by subject, these appeal factors get more to the feel of a particular book. For example I recently read and greatly enjoyed the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett. For me the subject matter was interesting but that was not really what kept me flipping pages late into the night. For me it was the fast-paced and upbeat feel of the book.

Now with Novelist you can search by just those kind of appeal factors.

Want to try it out? Here are a few tricks I found useful:

To get directly to the kind of items you want, use advanced search. To access this screen click on the words Advanced Search located under the search box on the home page.

To limit your books to just adult titles only click the checkbox Adults and then click Update Results after you do your initial search.

Use the links on the right side to limit your result set even further based on appeal characteristics you may not have thought of.

I can’t believe September is around the corner already! Where has this summer gone? We can help you ease the transition into fall with a great music event coming up in September.

On Saturday, September 11th, at 3:00 PM, the Geminus Guitar Duo will be performing at the library.

Foti Lycouridis and Hideki Yamaya formed the ensemble recently, and they’re based in Portland.

For a preview of their work, check out their videos on YouTube. I’ve been listening to the videos as I write this post, and it’s been a lovely 15 minutes or so of music. You can also see photos of Foti and Hideki in action at their Flickr photostream.

For their event at the library, the Geminus Guitar Duo will present a concert/discussion on the historical evolution of the classical guitar. They will perform Classical, Romantic and 20th century compositions on a number of historical instruments dating from the 1800s, modern classical guitars and guitars with 10 strings.

Foti and Hideki will discuss the important innovations in guitar making during the 19th century that led to the emergence of the instrument we call a classical guitar today. After the concert the audience is very welcome to ask questions and come up to have a closer look at the instruments. This promises to be an event that is both educational and enjoyable. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Thanks to the Friends of the Library for co-sponsoring this event.
